Servant Events

DORCAS is an organization made up of Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS) congregations in the Appalachian region of the Ohio District.  Our deaconess supports each congregation in a variety of ways but Servant Events have a huge impact on both the people in need and those who travel to Appalachia to serve.

In southern Ohio, she currently supports The Good Neighbors Project at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Ross County.  The deaconess identifies families struggling to maintain their home and make needed repairs.  Over the years, teams of volunteers have constructed wheelchair ramps, painted home exteriors, repaired damage to a home’s structural integrity, restored water and sewer service, and simply mowed acres of grass.

…in addition:

In eastern Kentucky, mission and evangelism efforts included partnering with local community organizations and businesses to teach the faith to a generation that has never been to church.  Efforts there meant meeting high school student athletes on their turf, literally.  A football camp led by college coaches gave nearly 100 young men the chance to hear the Gospel and ask questions while they developed and refined their playing skills.

…and let’s not forget:

In West Virginia, the deaconess connected a large Michigan congregation with mission efforts at Christ Our Savior of the Valley Lutheran Church in Lewisburg, and then in Alderson.  Now, more than five years later that partnership continues to help families who work hard but still live in poverty and battle seasonal flooding and damage from heavy rains and water runoff.
