Two of the most feared realities of our time are helplessness and dependency.  When we are confronted with the need to be cared for, we are reminded that being at God's mercy is a good place to be.  This is the theology of the cross.  In the midst of our own helplessness, Christ walks before us and beside us.  For all of us, Christ is our ultimate hope.
