When Diaconal OutReach Care and Services formed in 2006, it's member congregations were pleased to be able to work together to call a deaconess to this area. The organization continues to be supported by contributions from member congregations, fundraisers, and grants. However, it is important to note that the Appalachian Regional Commission identifies most of the nine (9) member congregations as residing in counties that are economically distressed or at-risk. The reality is that under these conditions it can be difficult to see how the Lord will provide for those He has set before our eyes and given into our care. Yet, confidently, we pray like the psalmist who lays his burdens before the Lord and then proclaims, "I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living! Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!" (Psalm 27:13-14).
The office of deaconess is created in Christian freedom to ensure that this work of practical, human serving of need is completed. The diaconal role of women is rightly identified in the context of the life of the church. The service of a deaconess finds expression as she shares the Gospel of Jesus Christ along with acts of human care. |
